3 Things You Don't Want To Do During Your Divorce Proceedings

Judy Alexander

The ending of your marriage and subsequent divorce can be a very painful and complex period in your life. Emotions run high, and making bad decisions in the heat of the moment is easy. While life as you have previously known it may be changing, there is advice you'll want to follow in order to navigate this time successfully.

1. Do Not Get Stuck In Your Emotions

The many emotions most people experience during a divorce are the same ones experienced by anyone going through grief and loss. These emotions include:

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

Unfortunately, it is difficult for most people to move from one stage to the next. You do not go straight through from stage 1 to stage 5. It is common to get caught up and even stuck in one emotion and unable to move on.

For example, when a divorce occurs due to infidelity on the part of your partner, it is natural to be angry. But when you cannot move away from anger, the emotion can devastate your body. These effects include elevated blood pressure, respiration rates, and even body temperatures.

Coping with the emotional ups and downs may require the assistance of a qualified mental health professional. Do not deny yourself the mental healing you need from this period. If you do not know a good counselor, ask for a recommendation from your divorce attorney,

2. Do Not Put Your Children In The Middle

While divorce affects the entire family, do not place your children in the middle of the mess. Your children are not pawns. You should not use them in your negotiation. They need a supportive environment to help them process the divorce.

Your children deserve to have a healthy relationship with both parents. Feeding them negative information or attempting to turn them away from their other parent is unfair and may potentially backfire on you.

3. Don't Delay Hiring A Good Divorce Attorney

Once you decide a divorce is imminent, one of the first things on your to-do list is to hire a good divorce attorney. A good divorce attorney will guide you through the process and advocate for you and your children in the courtroom.

Your attorney will make the process much easier by understanding and ensuring they meet all required legal components while keeping your wants and needs front and center. Do not agree to share an attorney with your spouse. This practice can present potential complications in the future.

Image Licensing Protections: An Introduction

When you sell stock photography, there is always a risk that someone may use your image in a way that you didn't permit in the licensing agreement. When that happens, you need to protect your licensing rights. The best way to do that is to work with a copyright and licensing attorney. I've spent a lot of time researching fair use and licensing restrictions. I hope that the information here helps you to not only understand your rights as the creator but also to learn how to document and enforce those rights and seek legal resolutions when they are violated.
