The Differences Between Becoming A Voice Writing Court Reporter And A Stenographic Court Reporter

Judy Alexander

If you are thinking about becoming a court reporter or stenographer, you have may have looked into it enough to see that there are different types. In either case, working in the legal field, you will transcribe or record speech using shorthand or voice recording equipment. You may do this to record depositions and court proceedings, or you might do this working in a private firm or with government agency.

Voice Writing Court Reporter

Court reporters who use voice writing will actually record themselves repeating what the person speaking has said. The role of a voice writing reporter is the same as the role of a stenographic court reporter, but the types of skills used are different. This role requires a dictation speed test. You must take this examination through the National Verbatim Reporters Association. If you do not pass, you cannot work in this position.

In order to do this job, you will wear a mask, called a stenomask, which is hooked up to a computer. You will use voice recognition software to create real-time transcriptions of the events. Isolation playback allows you to listen to only certain voices and to pinpoint what may have been said during coughing or another loud noise. This can be a very useful tool, once you learn how to use it.

Stenographic Court Reporter

Stenographic court reporters try to write verbatim what somebody else is saying, whether they are a witnesses, attorney, the accused, or somebody else. You will need to demonstrate that you can pass a writing speed test, which you can take through the National Court Reporters Association. Those who intend to take the test should be warned that it is quite difficult, and many people do not pass the first time they take it. It can be quite tedious work. Learning shorthand is a skill in its own, and it requires you to pay close attention to both your own writing and the verbatim words another person is speaking.

Becoming a Court Reporter

Whether you want to be a court reporter that writes or speaks, you need to become certified through a process of examinations. This is no easy task, and working as a court reporter requires long hours of training. Courses may last several months, in which you learn to use the stenomask and other equipment or to dictate with shorthand. No matter which option you choose, you will have a difficult but rewarding job ahead of you.

Image Licensing Protections: An Introduction

When you sell stock photography, there is always a risk that someone may use your image in a way that you didn't permit in the licensing agreement. When that happens, you need to protect your licensing rights. The best way to do that is to work with a copyright and licensing attorney. I've spent a lot of time researching fair use and licensing restrictions. I hope that the information here helps you to not only understand your rights as the creator but also to learn how to document and enforce those rights and seek legal resolutions when they are violated.
